I just found this out. Of course, I’d seen Lane Smith's illustration work before. I had many of his books in my classroom when I was teaching: Math Curse, The True Story of the The 3 Little Pigs!, Stinky Cheese Man. I loved his illustration style – so full of delectable texture. But I didn’t know I truly loved him until I read Stickler loves the world, which I had heard about on Book Delight with Chrissie Wright’s Favorite Picture Books and Chapter Books of 2023 podcast episode. The title of the book says it all - Stickler is a joyous optimist. But of course, it’s so much more than that. The story is a silly, humorous romp with twists and turns that readers will want to read it over and over again.
I am so grateful for the Stickler’s in my life and am so very glad that Lane Smith created this book. But it wasn’t just his picture book that made me fall in love with him...it was the FAQ page on his website which was sweet, funny, and I can’t believe I’m going to write this, made me feel seen. So thank you Lane Smith, for brightening my day and giving voice to the Stickler’s of the world!
